We saw reports several weeks ago that Dish may soon launch a new set-top box calling AirTV Player. Reports mentioned that the box would enable users to stream Netflix, Dish’s standalone TV streaming service Sling TV, and local channels over-the-air. Dish has officially announced the AirTV Player set-top box today. It’s powered by Android TV.
Since the AirTV Player is an Android TV device, users can install any app that they want, apps that are installed on the box by default include Sling TV, Netflix, and YouTube. The set-top box provides 4K streaming support as well.
Dish launched its standalone internet TV streaming service Sling TV quite some time back. It provides access to a robust library of live streaming channels but cord cutters do miss out on local channels.
This set-top box enables cord cutters to have access to over-the-air local channels aside from streaming services like Sling TV and Netflix. This should, at least in theory, make more people give up their conventional cable subscriptions for the flexibility of a standalone streaming service and that’s something that Dish obviously wants.
The AirTV Player is now available for purchase with prices starting at $99 for only the box and $129 with a bundled OTA adapter.
