It is no secret that Apple’s CEO Tim Cook views augmented reality as being “better” than virtual reality, which would seem to suggest that augmented reality products could be in the pipeline for the company. Now it seems that more details about Apple’s AR plans have surfaced, courtesy of known blogger Robert Scoble who made a post on Facebook (via MacRumors).
According to Scoble, he claims that a Zeiss employee “confirmed” the rumors that Apple and the company are working together on creating a pair of AR-based smart glasses that he claims could be announced later this year. Scoble says that this was further cemented by the fact that Zeiss had a booth in the AR portion of CES, but did not actually display any of their technology.
He claims that when he suggested that Apple’s CEO did not let the company display their products, “employees around me smiled nervously.” Make of it what you will, but like we said, Apple’s love of AR is hardly an industry secret so it would make sense that it is a piece of technology that they are hoping to leverage.
Whether or not it will result in a pair of smart glasses created in partnership with Carl Zeiss remains to be seen, so until we hear from Apple or Zeiss officially (whether it be a confirmation or denial), take it with a grain of salt for now.
