Recent reports have suggested that Sony is going to launch five new smartphones at the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona next month. A new report claims that it’s not going to be the only company that launches that many handsets. Alcatel is reportedly going to unveil five new smartphones as well and one of them is claimed to be a modular smartphone.
There aren’t a lot of details available at this point in time about the Alcatel modular smartphone but it’s claimed that users will be able to add to the handset’s functionalities by slapping on replaceable back covers.
If this is true, it appears that Alcatel is trying something different with its modular smartphone compared to what LG tried to do with the G5 and its “Friends.” That’s what it called the modules for the LG G5 that added functionality. The idea didn’t pay off for LG and it has decided to ditch the modular thing for the upcoming G6.
It’s not known at this point in time what additional functionalities Alcatel’s replaceable back covers will add to the smartphone. It will certainly be interesting to find out but for that we’ll have to wait until the Mobile World Congress 2017 which takes place in the final week of February.
