If a new report is believed, three popular Android smartphone manufacturers from Taiwan might miss their 2016 shipment targets. The report points out that Asus, Acer, and HTC are likely to miss the shipment targets that they set for themselves at the start of this year. The reason for lackluster performance is said to be declining shipments to lucrative markets like China, Europe, and the United States.
Citing sources from the industry, the report claims that HTC will only manage to ship between 10 million to 12 million smartphones by the end of 2016. It would be a significant decline from the 18 million units that the company shipped in 2015.
Asus, Taiwan’s leading smartphone vendor, is expected to ship some 20 million units this year down considerably from its target of 25 million units. Acer is only expected to ship fewer than 5 million units against a target of 10 million.
It’s understandable why these companies might end up missing their targets given that Chinese OEMs are rapidly expanding and capturing a huge portion of the market. The smartphone market is becoming increasingly competitive so it’s certainly hard for many of the existing players to compete.
Whether or not things turn around for these companies next year remains to be seen. Some of them will be unveiling new handsets early next year to try and get a good start to 2017.
