Snapchat announced its first wearable device – Spectacles – a couple of months ago. It’s basically a pair of sunglasses that feature a camera which enables users to take snaps on the go. The $130 Spectacles went on sale a few weeks back and they’ve been used by a surgeon in the United Kingdom to live stream the first surgery using Snapchat Spectacles.
Dr. Shafi Ahmed used Spectacles to live stream a first person view of a hernia repair surgery he recently conducted at the London Independent Hospital in London, United Kingdom.
The doctor performed the surgery while wearing the Spectacle and live streamed the entire procedure using Snapchat. He also offered insight into whatever he was doing during the procedure. This was meant to be a tutorial to his medical students.
Dr. Ahmed says that around 200 medical students viewed his Snapchat Story to follow along with the procedure. The live stream was archived for 24 hours during which it could be viewed again before it disappeared, that’s how all Snapchat Stories eventually perish.
A video of the entire live stream is now available on YouTube. It’s not for the faint of heart since it involves an actual surgery but if you’re interested in what a hernia repair procedure looks like from the doctor’s point of view, feel free to watch the video posted above.
