Samsung’s Trademark For ‘Smart AF’ Hints At Autofocusing Front Camera

galaxy-note-7-design_29-ear-speakerOne of the unique features coming to the Samsung Galaxy S8 will not be its dual lens design because last we heard, Samsung has apparently abandoned their plans for it. Instead what we can expect is a front-facing camera with autofocus, a trait that isn’t quite as common amongst smartphones these days.

If you’re wondering how real those claims are, a recent trademark filing for the name “Smart AF” was made by Samsung. Its description mentions that this term will be used with “mobile phones; smartphones; tablet computers; auto-focus photographic cameras for mobile phones, smartphones.”

Considering that pretty much all smartphone rear-facing cameras come with autofocusing, it seems unlikely that Samsung is trademarking the name for a feature that has been present for years already, which has led some to believe that they could be talking about autofocusing for the front-facing camera instead.

However it is likely that Samsung could have improved the autofocus on the rear-facing camera enough to call it by a different name. After all Samsung did promise that we would be able to expect an improved camera, so could this be it? In any case take it with a grain of salt, but hopefully we’ll have more details to share in the near future.
