Twitter’s Periscope Now Offers Live 360 Degree Videos

With the introduction of virtual reality technology, there has been an increased focus towards creating 360-degree videos, which basically when combined with a VR headset, allows users to get a 360-degree look in the video itself. This is versus more traditional forms of recording where you only get to see where the camera lens is pointed at.

Now it looks like Twitter’s Periscope app will be taking advantage of it as they have announced the support for live 360-degree videos. “With 360 video on Periscope, you can experience moments with the broadcaster and take a look around — it’s one step closer to actually being there.”

“Starting today, you’ll be able to join live 360 videos on Periscope and Twitter from some incredible broadcasters — getting front-row access at exclusive events, traveling to places across the globe, and getting up close with well-known personalities.” At the moment the feature is supported on mobile devices as well as desktop, although not all browsers on the desktop, such as Safari, support the feature yet.

Also the feature isn’t available to all users yet as they are still testing it out with a small number of partners, but we reckon eventually it should open up to more. In the meantime you can check out some examples of 360 Periscope broadcasts by looking for a badge that identifies such videos.
