Overwatch was released earlier this year and so far the game has been met with a ton of positive feedback and reviews. It also represents the first time in a long time that Blizzard has introduced a new franchise that isn’t part of its Warcraft, StarCraft, or Diablo universe, and we guess Blizzard must be pretty chuffed about its success.
In fact if there was more reason to be happy, data from research firm SuperData has revealed that Overwatch is the top grossing PC game of 2016. Assuming their numbers are accurate, Overwatch has managed to pull a whopping $585.6 million since its release earlier this year. This managed to beat out other titles such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive which made $257.2 million, Guild Wars 2 which made $91 million, Minecraft which earned $88.7 million, and Fallout 4 that managed to pull in $74.9 million.
Note that Overwatch is the only game on the list that was launched in 2016, and given that it is new we guess there is more excitement surrounding it which could account for the money it made. We’re not sure if Blizzard will be able to maintain the momentum moving forwards into 2017, but they do have plans for new maps, modes, and heroes which should help keep gamers interested.
