The practice of region-locking consoles used to be a pretty popular choice made back in the day. However with globalization, region-locking doesn’t really make that much sense anymore, and that’s why companies like Microsoft and Sony have eschewed those practices. Nintendo on the other hand hasn’t, but they could be changing their minds.
According to a post on NeoGAF, it seems that some users have discovered some signs to suggest that the upcoming Nintendo Switch will be region-free. This is according to an FCC filing reveals the power brick that the console could use, which is of the AC 100 – 240 V, 50 / 60 Hz, 1 A variety, thus leading some to speculate that it could hint at a region-free console. However as NDTV points out, the Wii U also had the same adapter and we all know that the Wii U was region-locked.
The FCC filing also seemed to have revealed that the console will not come with 3G or LTE support, meaning that if you wanted to take it on the go with you and play mobile games with multiplayer, you’d have to rely on a WiFi connection. Prior to this we had reported that the FCC filing also revealed that the console might not have removable batteries.
In any case Nintendo will be sharing the official details about the Switch on the 12th of January, 2017 during a special presentation, so hopefully these details will be confirmed then.
