German auto giant Volkswagen today introduced a new self-driving electric car concept that it’s going to present at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month. The interesting thing about this concept is that it has a retractable steering wheel. It envisages a future when we will be able to command the car to drive on its own and retract the steering wheel for additional space inside the cabin.
The show car that Volkswagen is going to present at the auto show next month will feature two electric motors and all-wheel drive. It’s going to have a multi-functional and flexible interior.
Volkswagen’s new electric car concept will be able to drive itself completely on its own in the future. Only a light press will be required on the Volkswagen logo in the center of the wheel for it to electrically retract into the cockpit. This will enable the driver to relax while laser scanners, ultrasonic and radar sensors and cameras monitor the road to enable the car to drive on its own without requiring any driver input.
The company says that this concept combines a vision that includes ample space for travel with a long electric driving range. It’s obviously going to take a long time before a car that’s capable of doing this is allowed on public roads, but the concept does give us an idea of Volkswagen’s vision for the future of mobility.
