YouTube rival Vimeo today announced the launch of its new applications for Apple TV, Android TV, and Samsung smart TVs. This is Vimeo’s first HTML5-based TV app on the Tizen OS that powers Samsung’s smart TVs. Vimeo says that the new apps introduce a complete rebuild of its TV experience and that they have been customized for watching and discovering content on these platforms.
The new apps provide users with a cinematic experience and gets them immediately watching videos that have been curated by the in-house team. This includes ad-free content that’s uploaded on Vimeo by independent filmmakers.
“We want people to know they can launch the app, lean back onto the couch, and have something incredible start playing right away without having to hunt for it,” said Will True, Senior Product Manager, TV Apps at Vimeo.
Curated videos are featured prominently on the home page of the new apps. The selection of curated videos is updated on a daily basis to ensure that users always get fresh, new videos curated by Vimeo’s in-house team. This week, the app features Vimeo’s Staff Picks Best of the Year 2016 collection.
Viewers will also be able to scroll through and watch from their customized feed from categories, people, and channels that they follow on Vimeo. The entire collection of purchase videos can be found in the Library section of the app.
The new Apple TV and Android TV Vimeo apps are available now while the Samsung smart TV app is going to be released in the coming weeks.
