That being said, it seems that Netflix plans on doubling their efforts come 2017. In a report from Variety, the company announced that they plan to double the amount of original shows that they have, going up to 1,000 hours worth which is more than double of the total number of hours that the service has accumulated so far in 2016.
The company also expects to focus more on unscripted shows. This is according to Netflix’s CEO Ted Sarandos who said that they wanted more shows that travel internationally, like “Ultimate Beastmaster”. That being said, while the company is looking at more original content, they won’t all be produced in-house.
Stranger Things was actually the first series that was made and produced in-house at Netflix, but they’re also looking to purchase the rights to series and have other studios produce it for them. This combined with offline viewing should make Netflix a force to contend with in 2017.
