Now we had previously heard that Apple and Foxconn were thinking about possibly producing iPhones in India and it looks like that could happen. A report from The Times of India (via AppleInsider) has revealed that industry sources have told them that iPhone production in India could begin as soon as by the end of 2017.
Apparently Apple supplier Wistron is preparing an iPhone assembly facility in Peenya, an industrial center in the city of Bengaluru. If you’re looking for more evidence, AppleInsider points out that earlier this month Apple had created job listings for two positions: an iPhone Operations Program Manager (OPM) and a New Product Introduction (NPI) Product Quality Manager, and both of which call for manufacturing experience as a prerequisite.
As it stands iPhones in India are particularly expensive due to the 12.5% import tax levied on the device, so by manufacturing in India, Apple could keep costs down and make the phone more affordable to locals.
