When Activision first took the wraps off Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, it was met with massive dislikes. Its reveal trailer is probably one of the most disliked videos in YouTube history, but it seems that all those dislikes did not really matter because in a press release by Activision, they are boasting that Infinite Warfare is 2016’s top selling console game.
According to Eric Hirshberg, Activision’s CEO, “Call of Duty is retail’s #1 grossing console franchise in the U.S. for the 8th consecutive year and the boldly innovative Infinite Warfare is the #1 grossing console game of the year at retail in the U.S.” However as GameSpot points out, there are several qualifications that Activision makes in their statement.
The first of which is that Activision is only talking about console games, and not video games in general. Secondly Activision is basing their claim on revenue made from physical sales, not digital, which means that there might be games out there that do better digitally than physically, so those are some important distinctions to make.
It does sound like Activision is really trying to sell us on the idea that Infinite Warfare is doing a lot better than what we had initially thought. Shortly after the reveal trailer, Activision responded by saying that despite the dislikes, they believe that the game will still do well, and we guess it looks like they were right. In the meantime there is a free Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare trial going on this weekend. It runs from the 15th to 20th of December, so you can go ahead and try it out for yourself before deciding if this is the game for you.
