Why is this? According to Apple’s service page (via NDTV), the Cupertino company revealed that they will be charging to service the battery of the AirPods even if it is under warranty. The amount is at $49 each, meaning that even within its warranty you’ll still have to pay if you want the batteries changed.
According to Apple, “If you need service for your AirPods or charging case, there’s no charge if the issue is covered under the Apple One Year Limited Warranty or consumer law. Our warranty covers a defective battery, but it doesn’t cover wear from normal use. If the battery capacity on your AirPods or charging case decreases over time, you can replace them for a battery service fee.”
Like we said, the fee isn’t that much but considering how much you paid for them to begin with, you’d think that Apple could at least foot the bill for the first year or so. That being said, batteries do wear and tear and there are ways to go about maximizing their lifecycle, so perhaps you’ll want to check up on that if you’re looking to maximize how long your AirPods will last you.
