A new report published today claims to shed some light on Apple’s Mac plans for next year. It’s said that Apple is planning “modest” upgrades for its Macs in 2017. It may even be thinking about building standalone keyboards that feature the Touch Bar it introduced with the new MacBook Pro as well as the Touch ID fingerprint sensor.
Bloomberg also adds in its report that Apple is only going to launch the standalone keyboards with the Touch Bar and Touch ID if both prove to be successful on the company’s new MacBook Pros.
It doesn’t go into detail about how a standalone keyboard is going to handle security issues related to fingerprint scanning, but the keyboard is presumably going to have an integrated Secure Enclave where fingerprints will be stored on the device itself.
The 2017 iMac is expected to feature USB Type-C ports like the new MacBook Pros as well as new AMD graphics cards. Apple CEO Tim Cook did say yesterday that the company has “great desktops” in its roadmap but didn’t provide any detail about what they would bring to the table. Apple didn’t refresh the iMac in 2016 so it’s definitely up for one next year.
Last but not the least, Apple is expected to refresh the 12 inch MacBook and MacBook Pro with speed improvements next year. None of this has been officially confirmed by Apple because we’re all well aware of where the company stands on addressing rumors about its future products.
