To be more specific, she did not actually buy the entire house, but rather she managed to afford to pay the deposit on the house by selling 20 of the iPhone 7s that were gifted to her. The report originated from China in which a blog post penned by someone calling themselves Proud Qiaoba wrote a tale of a colleague who is the woman in question.
According to the BBC, “Xiaoli, a woman from the city of Shenzhen in southern China, asked each of her 20 current boyfriends to buy her a newly launched iPhone 7. She then sold all of the phones to a mobile phone recycling site called Hui Shou Bao for 120,000 Chinese yuan (about £14,500), and used the money to put down a deposit on a house in the countryside.”
While it does sound like a tall tale, the BBC has managed to verify part of the story by speaking to Hui Shou Bao, who confirmed that they had purchased 20 iPhones from a female client at the start of October, and paid about 6,000 Chinese yuan per device. When asked for an interview, Xiaoli had reportedly declined.
