While consoles like Sony’s PlayStation platform and Microsoft’s Xbox platform have titles that have been released on the other console, they aren’t cross-play supported. This means that Xbox One gamers playing a certain game won’t be able to play that same game with someone else on the PlayStation 4.
However this is a gap that Ubisoft wants to bridge as they have announced that for three of their upcoming virtual reality games, they will feature cross-play support. This includes Werewolves Within and Star Trek: Bridge Crew. Eagle Flight, which has already been released, will receive a patch that will enable cross-play.
What this means is that if you own the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, or even the PlayStation VR, you’ll be able to find other players easily. A good example was when for some reason, Activision decided to make Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare purchased from the Windows 10 Store exclusive to other gamers who bought from the Windows 10 Store, resulting in players unable to play games as there weren’t enough players to get a game going.
According to David Votypka, senior creative director at Red Storm, “Making our VR titles cross-platform has been a goal of ours from the start and we’re happy to announce that Eagle Flight, Werewolves Within, and Star Trek: Bridge Crew will be playable cross-platform on PSVR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive.” We can only hope that other developers will follow suit with their releases.
