It’s very easy to sign up as an Uber driver but there’s one big prerequisite: you need a car. Buying a new car can prove to very hard for some people so what are they to do if they want to supplement their income by driving for Uber? The ride-sharing company has teamed up with General Motors for this purpose, it’s going to enable drivers to rent vehicles from GM on a weekly basis.
Car rentals for budding Uber drivers will be processed through Maven, GM’s car sharing service, that’s gradually being expanded across the country. Drivers will pay $179 plus taxes and fees for the weekly rental, they can use the car for personal trips as well without having to pay anything extra.
Maven might be available in a handful of markets across the United States, but its partnership with Uber is being tested as part of a new 90 day pilot program that’s limited to San Francisco. General Motors already has a similar car rental program with Lyft, Uber’s primarily rival.
Uber drivers who take part in this program will be able to pick up a Chevy Malibu, Chevy Cruze, or Chevy Trax for a week by paying the rates mentioned above. All they need to pay is the rental cost, any and all proceeds from rides net expenses will all be for the driver.
