If you have some PS4 DualShock 4 controllers lying around at home and you’d rather not buy new controllers just to use it on your PC, you’ll be pleased to learn that a recent update by Steam to its client beta has enabled native controller support for the PC. This means that you will be able to use your PS4 controllers to play games via Steam without resorting to third-party apps and tools.
Support for PS4 controllers was announced earlier in October and prior to that, users had to rely on third-party apps in order to get the PS4 controller working with Steam. According to the changelog, “Added Steam Configurator support for PS4 Dual Shock Controller. Note that this is a beta release. Enable in Big Picture settings Add/Test Controller settings. When enabled, PS4 controllers will have access to the same sort of customization/configuration support as Steam Controllers, including native API support.”
It also mentions that “PS4 Controllers using this system can map the trackpad, gyro, buttons, etc. to keyboard, mouse, or x-input outputs and can make use of action sets, touch menus, radial menus, and so forth.” We should note that these changes have only been made to the client beta, meaning that if you aren’t part of the beta group then you won’t see this feature enabled yet.
However we guess this is a good sign as beta means it is one step closer to it being released for all gamers, so do keep an eye out for it.
