Microsoft has revealed that SMS Relay features will soon be added to Skype for Android. It sort of mentioned this in passing in a blog post that was meant to announce that SMS Relay features have been added to the Windows 10 preview app of Skype. The company hasn’t provided a concrete timeline as yet so it’s unclear at this point in time just how long it will take for these features to land on Skype for Android.
SMS Relay in Windows 10 enables users to send and receive SMS and MMS messages directly from a Windows 10 PC when Skype for Windows 10 Mobile is selected as the default messaging app. It lets users send and receive texts, group messages, and photos right from their computer with a single view of SMS and Skype conversations.
Windows users need to have Skype Preview on both their PC and mobile for this to work. They first to have set Skype as the default SMS app and select the “Enable Skype on this device to sync my SMS messages” option to PC to start using the SMS Relay features.
This nugget of information that these features will be headed to Android as well is buried deep within the blog post. “We are also working on bringing SMS relay to Android in the future,” writes Microsoft, but who knows when that’s going to happen.
