Samsung started off the year by promising that it’s going to expand its mobile payment service called Samsung Pay in additional markets across the globe. It really has done that but one of the markets that was on the roadmap for this year hasn’t received Samsung Pay yet. Much to the dismay of its fans in the United Kingdom, Samsung has now confirmed that the Samsung Pay UK launch has been delayed to 2017.
A spokesperson for the company has confirmed in a statement provided to The Telegraph that “Following successful launches of Samsung Pay around the world, we are planning to launch the service in the UK in 2017.”
Don’t confuse that with a new revelation, it’s actually a cleverly worded acceptance of the fact that it’s unable to deliver on the promise of launching Samsung Pay in the United Kingdom this year, though the fault may not fall entirely on the company’s shoulders.
According to the scribe, negotiations between Samsung and local banks are still continuing. Samsung needs to have at least all of the major banks on board before it can launch the service in the country. Once it has their support, there’s nothing stopping it from flipping Samsung Pay’s switch on in the United Kingdom.
It’s not known at this point in time how long Samsung is going to take next year to launch Samsung Pay across the pond.
