It turns out that it might have been a smart move because according to the latest numbers from StatCounter Global Stats, it seems that for the first time ever, mobile internet usage has actually surpassed that of desktop. What this means is that the number of people using their mobile devices to surf the web is actually more than those sitting in front of their computers.
Based on their numbers, mobile and tablet devices accounted for 51.3% of worldwide internet usage in October, versus the 48.7% for desktop. According to Aodhan Cullen, StatCounter CEO, “This should be a wake-up call especially for small businesses, sole traders, and professionals to make sure that their websites are mobile friendly.”
“Mobile compatibility is increasingly important not just because of growing traffic but because Google favours mobile friendly websites for its mobile search results.” Google has indeed started to favor websites that have mobile friendly content, such as by marking them in search results as “mobile-friendly”.
