Microsoft confirmed a couple of days ago that it’s going to release its primary developer tool, Visual Studio, for the Mac. That’s a pretty big change for the company which has almost always locked developers using Visual Studio to its platform. As part of its recent strategic shift that’s seeing more of the company’s software and services making way to rival platforms, the company today released the first preview of Visual Studio for Mac.
Microsoft’s flagship developer tool is now available for Mac. This has been made possible by the technology it received from Xamarin when it acquired the cross-platform development company earlier this year. The open source MonoDevelop IDE helps as well since it’s actually the building block of the Xamarin Studio IDE.
Visual Studio for Mac looks quite similar to its Windows counterpart as far as the overall look and feel is concerned. It comes with almost all of the core tools like IntelliSense and also features Xamarin’s cross-platform development tools.
Developers can now use Visual Studio on their Macs to develop applications for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. It certainly doesn’t get any better than this for frequent Visual Studio users who would like to have the ability to use this tool on their Mac as well.
