Naturally this led to speculation that Microsoft did not want their Office apps to be compatible on Chrome OS devices. However the good news is that for whatever reason that caused the error message, Microsoft has since issued a statement to reassure users that Office apps will continue to work on Chrome OS devices.
The statement reads, “Our strategy has not changed. Office for Android is supported on Chrome OS devices via the Google Play Store. While Google Play on Chrome OS is in beta, we are partnering with Google to deliver the best experience for Chromebook users and plan to make the apps available on all compatible devices by general availability.”
In case you might have forgotten, Chrome OS will now support Android apps. Microsoft’s Office apps are on Android which means that in turn, they should work on Chrome OS as well. However as Microsoft points out, Google Play on Chrome OS is still in its beta stage meaning that there are kinks that need to be worked out, but otherwise it’s business as usual.
