LG doesn’t provide an official bootloader unlock method for all smartphones that it makes so the ones that do are special in their own way. The official bootloader unlock tool makes it very easy for users to make advanced customizations to their handset without having to employ workarounds to achieve the same result. Users in the United States will be happy to find out that the LG V20 bootloader unlock tool supports the handset for the “U.S. open market.”
LG has previously supported the LG G4 and G5 for the EU open market. It also supported the V10 for Europe with France being the only exception.
This makes it the first time that a device destined for the North American market has been added to the list as well. The LG V20 for the U.S. open market is actually codenamed US996.USA and is listed on the official LG bootloader unlock page, which means that it’s supported.
This page also provides instructions which users can easily follow if they want to unlock LG V20 bootloader. It also mentions that the warranty is voided when the bootloader is unlocked and that it’s a process which can’t be reversed.
LG doesn’t really clarify what the “U.S. open market” means but it’s possible that the company is just referring to the officially unlocked units that are sold in the country.
