Tesla released a demo video last month which showcased the fully autonomous driving capabilities of the Model X. The new self-driving system enabled the Model X to drive on its own without any human input. The demo showed us how the Model X emerged from a garage, made its way through suburban streets and merged on a freeway before ending up at a Tesla facility all by itself. That was a cool demo and Tesla has now released another one which shows us precisely what its self-driving car saw.
Self-driving systems rely on cameras, radars, and a host of other sensors that bring in vital information that’s processed by the car’s brain before decisions on how on drive are made automatically.
We normally don’t get to see what those systems see in videos that showcase self-driving capabilities of a car which is why Tesla’s latest demo is so interesting, to say the least. It gives us a look behind-the-scenes as well.
We can see the system picking up different objects as the car makes it way, objects like signs, road lines, cars, and even pedestrians. It captures the flow of the environment so to speak in order to get a sense of where it’s headed.
It’s still going to take some time before fully autonomous cars are allowed on public roads. A lot of work still needs to be done in order to make these systems perfect but at least we do know what the future holds for the automotive industry.
