GM Starts Producing Its Mass-Market Electric Car

General Motors showed off its mass-market electric car being launched as the Bolt under the Chevrolet brand about a year back. The design and details have since been confirmed that the car maker has now started mass producing its first mass-market electric car. The Chevy Bolt is in direct competition with the Tesla Model 3 and it already has a lead since the Model 3 isn’t going to enter production until mid-2017.

GM has started mass production of the Chevy Bolt at a plant in Orion Township, Michigan. This means that the company is now on track to sell this mass-market electric car by the end of this year. The Bolt is priced at $30,000 after tax credits.

The company isn’t taking pre-orders for the Bolt like Tesla has for the Model 3. Its mass-market electric car is similarly priced but has raked in more than 400,000 pre-orders. These are people who have actually put down a deposit.

Nevertheless, increased competition in the affordable electric car segment is only going to be good for the electric car industry as a whole. Just how well the Bolt is able to perform in the market remains to be seen, GM does promise a 200-mile range on a single charge, and that’s a claim which will surely be put to the test once the car starts rolling off the production line.
