Apple is opening up its mobile payments service to non-profits. The company announced today that Apple Pay users will now be able to make donations to non-profit organizations. This is currently limited to the United States but may be expanded over time to other markets where the company’s mobile payments service has gone live. Non-profits can integrate Apple Pay into their websites as well as their mobile apps to collect donations.
Apple is rolling out this big change with the holiday season just around the corner. It’s that time of the year when non-profits normally see an uptick in donations so it certainly makes sense to push this feature at this point in time.
The company has relaxed a rule previously in place which didn’t allow iOS apps to collect funds for charities and fundraisers. The process had to be done outside the app, either over SMS or through Safari. Non-profits will now be able to add a “donate” button within their app to easily allow users to donate via Apple Pay.
Users can authenticate their donations using the Touch ID fingerprint scanner on mobile devices while users on the web will have to use Safari to initiate the process and authenticate it on their iPhone or Apple Watch.
