AT&T is making it easier for Amazon Echo users to send text messages. It has created a new skill for the Alexa digital assistant that powers Echo devices to enable its subscribers to send text messages with nothing but voice commands. The AT&T Send Message skill is now available for Alexa and can readily be used with any Echo device. This is part of a broader partnership that also puts Echo devices inside AT&T stores.
Amazon Echo and Echo Dot can now be purchased via AT&T’s online store as well as its retail stores across the country. The Echo costs $179 while the Echo Dot is priced at $49. Alexa powers both devices.
Alexa has support for countless skills which enable it to perform a whole host of functions such as playing music, calling an Uber, reading the news, creating reminders, and now allowing users to send text messages with the AT&T Send Message skill.
AT&T is the first carrier to offer this functionality with Amazon Echo devices. It’s enabling users to send text messages from their mobile number to a predetermined list of contacts. It’s a great feature to shoot quick messages when users are in a hurry or just can’t pick up their phone right now. Up to ten frequently contacted friends can be added to this skill for quick texting.
