Nowadays with everything being connected to the internet or needing an internet connection, telcos are certainly cashing in on it, what with them selling data plans for your phones, your tablets, your smart home appliances, your cars, and now it seems that drone owners can look forward to an additional bill to pay for drone data.
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, it seems that Verizon has plans to start selling drone data plans. So the question is, why would anyone need drone data plans? The idea is that by connecting the drones to Verizon’s wireless network, it will allow them to stream their footage directly online without having to worry about looking for a free WiFi hotspot or tethering.
Verizon apparently plans to charge $25 a month for the service which will net drone users 1GB of data every month. For owners who need more data, $80 a month will get you 10GB. These prices don’t stray too far from regular mobile data, but we guess it will probably only appeal to hobbyists or professionals, such as news crews, who might have the need to be able to stream photos and videos live while on the go.
It remains to be seen if other carriers will hop on board with the idea, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they’re waiting to see how Verizon’s plans do first before jumping in with both feet.
