It is one thing to be able to see things in VR, and it’s another to be able to interact with objects in VR, which is why companies like Oculus have created controllers for use in the environment. It also sounds like Valve could be working on something as well, according to a report from TechCrunch.
During the Steam Dev Days conference, Valve showed off a controller design in which they claim that it will allow for users to be able to pick up and drop virtual objects without actually having to let go of the controller. It is unclear as to how this will work, but it has since led to speculation that Valve could be working on some kind of wrist-mounted controller which we guess makes sense.
A controller mounted on the wrist could allow users to pick up and drop objects in VR like they would in real life. As it stands, the controllers for VR require users to hold the controller in their hand which means that interaction will come by way of gestures and button pressing, which we guess works but isn’t quite the same.
As you can see in the image to the right, the controller in its current form looks like it’s in its early stages of prototyping so obviously what you see isn’t the final product, but it does give us an idea of what we might be able to expect.
