We’ve been hearing rumors for a few years now that Apple is going to shift to OLED displays for the iPhone but the company hasn’t done that yet. Recent rumors suggest that next year’s model, which will also be a commemoration of the iPhone’s tenth anniversary, is going to feature an OLED display. The newly appointed Sharp CEO Tai Jeng-wu appears to have confirmed rumors that the next-generation iPhone is going to have an OLED display.
Nikkei reports that Tai commented on Apple’s future plans during a talk to students at Tatung University, his alma mater. He was speaking to students after being presented with an honorary doctorate degree by the university.
“The iPhone has been evolving and now it is switching from LTPS (low-temperature poly-silicon) to OLED panels,” Tai is reported to have said in his talk, “We don’t know whether Apple’s OLED iPhones will be a hit, but if Apple doesn’t walk down this path and transform itself, there will be no innovation. It is a crisis but it is also an opportunity,” he added.
The Sharp CEO also revealed that the company is developing a new OLED manufacturing facility in Japan and that the company might even produce OLED panels in the United States “if our key customer demands us to manufacture in the U.S.”
It merits mentioning here that Sharp has always been rumored to be one of the suppliers from which Apple will source OLED displays for iPhones.
