This is why it does not come as a surprise to learn that over in Singapore, the country’s self-driving taxi service, nuTonomy, has gotten into its first accident. What exactly happened is unclear, but from the reports it sounds like the taxi hit a truck while changing lanes, although thankfully no one was injured which was aided by the fact that it wasn’t driving particularly fast.
In a statement provided to The Verge, the company said, “nuTonomy is cooperating fully with the investigation by the Singapore Traffic Police and Land Transport Authority. Additionally, the company is conducting its own investigation into the exact cause of the accident.” Singapore’s Land Transport Authority also posted on Facebook a statement of their own.
It reads, “A self-driving vehicle belonging to nuTonomy was involved in a minor incident at Biopolis Drive in one-north at 9.28am today. The test vehicle was changing lane when it collided with a lorry at a low speed. There were no injuries. The Land Transport Authority and the Police are investigating the cause of the incident.”
