Samsung Announces Plans To Acquire Viv Labs, Siri’s Founders

samsung logoMicrosoft has Cortana, Apple has Siri, and Google has Google Assistant. Those are some of the major voice assistant platforms out there at the moment, and while Samsung has dabbled in creating voice assistants for their own platform, it’s safe to say that it never quite took off the way Samsung imagined.

However it seems that the company could be thinking launching a new service in the future, or at least that’s what’s being speculated as Samsung has announced that they will be acquiring Viv Labs, who for those unfamiliar is comprised of some of Siri’s founders – Dag Kittlaus, Adam Cheyer, and Chris Brigham.

So far Viv’s AI has proven to be a more enhanced version of Siri where it can understand more complex questions and can pull off complicated tasks. It is also expected to get smarter the longer you use it, meaning that there is less upkeep from its developers and ultimately it should grow into something that’s customized to its users.

According to Samsung’s CTO of mobile communications Injong Rhee, “Viv was built with both consumers and developers in mind. This dual focus is also what attracted us to Viv as an ideal candidate to integrate with Samsung home appliances, wearables and more, as the paradigm of how we interact with technology shifts to intelligent interfaces and voice control.” In what shape or form Viv’s technology will be applied to Samsung’s products remains to be seen.
