Sony is preparing the PlayStation 4 ahead of the launch of the PlayStation VR. The company has rolled out an update for the PS4 Media Player which adds support for PlayStation VR. The update to the media player will enable the console to provide an immersive audio and visual experience to users who pick up Sony’s headset. The updated PS4 Media Player will allow PSVR owners to view 360-degree equirectangular photos and videos.
The update is also going to enable users to listen to high-resolution FLAC audio files and it’s capable of upscaling conventional audio files like MP3s to higher resolution.
PS4 Media Player version 2.50 is now being rolled out. Users should keep in mind that it will only be able to play 360-degree content that’s captured using an equirectangular camera. Any and all supported files must be captured in equirectangular format by a 360-degree omnidirectional camera, so says Sony’s official blog post.
Sony’s DSEE HX technology will play a major role in upscaling non-FLAC lossless audio files to higher resolutions. This will enable the console to provide a richer audio experience to users. So even if you don’t pick up a PlayStation VR headset this update still brings something new for you.
PS4 Media Player version 2.50 has started rolling out for free to all PS4 owners today.
