Google announced their new Google Wifi routers at their event yesterday. This isn’t Google’s first attempt at creating a router as prior to this, they launched the OnHub routers. So the question is, what will become of OnHub customers? Is Google going to focus on both? Abandon the OnHub?
The good news is that Google won’t be abandoning OnHub customers just yet. In fact it seems that Google will allow for OnHub and Google Wifi routers to work together. In a support page on Google’s website, the company details how the OnHub routers will work together with the Google Wifi routers.
According to Google, “OnHub and Google Wifi will work together. So if you have an OnHub and need more coverage, simply add a Wifi point to your existing network and — voila — you now have a mesh Wi-Fi network.” However it seems that it might need a software update for it to work as Google notes that they will inform OnHub customers when the collaboration is ready.
Basically it sounds like you can keep using your OnHub router as the “main” router, while the Google Wifi pucks can act as a more advanced/smarter version of a WiFi extender, albeit a rather expensive one, so we guess it really boils down to your needs at the end of the day.
