So the question is, what will become of Nintendo’s current handheld console, the 3DS? Does the Switch represent some kind of unification of the company’s consoles and that they could eventually phase the 3DS out? The good news for 3DS fans is that the console appears to be here to stay, or at least that’s what we can surmise from Nintendo’s statement to Polygon.
According to Nintendo, they stressed the fact that the Switch will be a home gaming system. “Nintendo Switch is a home gaming system first and foremost. We have made no announcement regarding the future of Nintendo 3DS.” That being said, we reckon it wouldn’t be fair for the Switch to replace the 3DS to begin with.
After all the 3DS is priced under $200 and while the Switch’s pricing has yet to be announced, based on the pricing of other consoles we expect that it will cost more than that, so to ask gamers to pay a speculative price of $300-$400 for a handheld gaming system would be hard to justify.
