Right now not much is known about the Nintendo Switch save for what it looks like. It has been speculated that console could have touchscreen functionality and a remote that will function similarly to the Wii Remote. We also know that Nintendo wants to make it a single-screen experience, but beyond that it’s really anyone’s guess.
However the folks at Polygon have compiled some recently discovered patents filed by Nintendo that could hint at some potential features. We should note that in the past we have come across several Nintendo patents that we thought could be features of the Switch, but those did not pan out so there’s no telling if these will either.
That being said, some of them sound like they could be potential features, such as the console’s ability to recognize gestures to identify the number of fingers a player is holding up, or moving an object across a screen by moving their hands to the side, or using it as a steering wheel to control games like Mario Kart. One of the patents even suggests that the Switch could come with a projector to project images of objects onto surfaces like the player’s hand.
Now given that Nintendo is keeping mum on most of the features of the Switch, it’s hard to tell if these patents are just outlandish ideas Nintendo is trying to protect, or if they are actual features of the console. Either way gamers have no choice but to wait until 2017 if they want to find out more.
