According to Cuomo’s proposal, he plans to install cameras, sensors, and facial recognition systems under the bridges and in the tunnels. The idea is that with more of the technology being placed around the state, it could help to identify and to capture terrorists/criminals, which is an increasing concern.
In a post on the governor’s website, “At each crossing, and at structurally sensitive points on bridges and tunnels, advanced cameras and sensors will be installed to read license plates and test emerging facial recognition software and equipment. These technologies will be applied across airports and transit hubs – including the Penn-Farley Complex – to ultimately develop one system-wide plan.”
It has been pointed out that right now, facial recognition tech is still far from perfect as apparently it has trouble recognizing people of color, but we guess this is something that will most likely be improved upon in the future.
