Yesterday there were rumors that Apple was planning on introducing a new app for the Apple TV. The goal of this app was to create a centralized hub of sorts in which Apple TV users can find all their favorite shows as well as recommendations without having to jump from app to app, which is admittedly rather troublesome.
Sure enough the rumors have since proven true as Apple has since announced the app which is simply dubbed “TV”. However it won’t be just limited to the Apple TV as it will be available on the iPhone and iPad, meaning that you can get the same experience even when you are on the go.
In a way it works a bit like Netflix’s UI in which it is able to remember what shows you’ve watched halfway, and via the “Up next” section, it will show you the TV shows or movies that you’ve watched halfway to remind you that you can continue watching them. It will also know what shows you’ve been watching so that it can tell you when new episodes are available.
There are also new sections like “What to watch”, “TV Spotlight”, and “Movie Spotlight” which will offer up recommendations based on the various Apple TV apps that you have installed or have subscribed to. Basically this helps users save time as they will be able to do everything from a single app as opposed to having to open different apps for different networks, like Starz, HBO, and so on.
Apple has announced that the “TV” app will be a free download and will be available in the US starting this December.
