Google first unveiled its Daydream virtual reality platform earlier this year at I/O 2016 and also unveiled a reference design. The company today launched its own virtual reality headset called the Daydream View. You’ll immediately notice that it’s a lot different from other VR headsets as it has been made out of fabric instead of hard plastic. Google says that this doesn’t just make the headset lighter but also makes it more comfortable for users.
Google has worked with several clothing manufacturers to craft the Daydream View out of fabric to ensure that it’s as comfortable to wear as possible. Using fabric has also allowed the company to offer it in three different colors: Snow, Slate, and Crimson.
The Daydream View VR headset has a self-contained phone mounting system. The handset simply needs to be placed in the flap and users don’t need to concern themselves with any cables or ports. There are no controls on the headset itself but it’s accompanied by a small remote which can also be tucked inside the headset when not in use.
Google’s new Pixel smartphone is the first Daydream-compatible handset but the company has said that smartphones from other manufacturers will be certified for use with this headset as well. The company has also lined up some exclusive VR experiences for the headset including but not limited to an exclusive Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them experience which will transport the user into J.K Rowling’s wizarding world.
The Daydream View VR headset and remote will be available this November for $79 combined.
