Google Rumored To Be Working On A Mixed Reality Headset

In terms of both virtual and augmented reality, Google has dabbled in a bit of both. With the Google Glass, it acted as something of an augmented reality headset, while the recently released Daydream View VR is a virtual reality headset. However it seems that there is another headset that Google could be working on.

According to a report from Engadget, Google is rumored to be working on a mixed reality headset. Unlike the Google Glass that placed a display over one eye of the user, this headset is said to feature technology like eye-tracking, and will come with a host of sensors and algorithms that will be able to map out the real-world space in front of the user.

This will allow the headset to place digital objects alongside the objects in the real-world. Also unlike the Daydream View VR, this rumored headset will apparently not require a smartphone or a computer to power it as it will be completely standalone. If this sounds familiar, it is because in July we heard rumors that Google could be working on a standalone VR headset.

It was initially reported that the headset had been killed off, but later it was rumored that maybe it was not the complete story and that it could still be alive and well. There is some evidence of that being true as a report from The Drum revealed a “wireless virtual reality” device that passed through the FCC and also listed Mike Jazayeri, the director of product management for Google’s VR group, as a contact.

We have no idea what the final product could look like or when it will even be announced, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for more details which will hopefully surface in the near future.
