For those who don’t already know, Google has a single index of documents when it comes to search, meaning that it doesn’t matter if you search from your phone, tablet, or computer, it will come from that same index. However a report from Search Engine Land has revealed that Google will be changing that.
This is according to Google’s webmaster trends analyst Gary Illyes who revealed that Google will soon create a separate search index for mobile in the coming months, and that it is possible that this mobile version could end up being the primary search index, which we guess makes sense considering that we are considerably more mobile these days, so beefing up search on mobile does make sense.
Let’s not forget that Google is already starting to pay more attention to mobile by giving them features that desktop users don’t, such as Accelerated Mobile Pages, and recently we also saw Google introduce new types of search recommendations that are once again exclusive to the mobile version of its search.
At this point it is still too early to determine how a mobile index will work. It is possible that maybe we could be looking at more mobile-friendly websites, something that Google has prioritized over the years. It could also start ranking websites based on pure mobile content, whereas right now it relies on desktop content to determine mobile rankings. Either way it does sound like these are some big changes that are taking place and that users can look forward to them in the near future.
