You might have heard about George Hotz when he became the first person ever to jailbreak an iPhone many years ago. He was then able to jailbreak the PlayStation 3 as well but Sony wasn’t too pleased with him and they were involved in a long legal battle. For some time now, Hotz has been working on a self-driving car project but he has decided to give it up. The man himself has confirmed that the George Hotz self-driving car project is dead.
The self-driving car project was actually focused on an after-market kit called Comma One which cost $999 and would have brought semi-autonomous driving capabilities to some Acura and Honda Civic models.
Hotz decided to kill the project when his company Comma.ai received a letter from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in which a concern was expressed that this project would the safety of Comma.ai’s and other road users at risk. The letter accompanied a special order that requested Comma.ai to provide more information about the Comma One.
Hotz revealed this news over Twitter, he also added that he would much rather spend my life building amazing tech than dealing with regulators and lawyers. It isn’t worth it.” The hacker extraordinaire has confirmed that he has killed the Comma One project and that this company Comma.ai is going to explore “other products and markets.”
