Facebook Messenger May Get Snapchat Stories-Like Feature Soon

It has been rumored time and again that Facebook was quite interested in acquiring Snapchat but a deal was never reached. We’ve seen the company gradually copy some of Snapchat’s features for its own products. Instagram Stories is the most recent example of a Snapchat feature that Facebook took inspiration from. According to a new report, Facebook is now testing a similar feature for the standalone Messenger app that has grown to boast over a billion users of its own.

TechCrunch reports that Facebook has launched the “Messenger Day” feature in Poland which enables users to share photos and videos with filters that automatically disappear in 24 hours. That’s precisely how Snapchat Stories work.

The world’s largest social network is apparently going to start spreading this feature in markets where Snapchat is not yet popular. This may allow it to increase the retention rate for Messenger users and ensure that they keep coming back to the app.

Facebook has acknowledged that it’s testing this feature in Poland but doesn’t say if it plans on rolling out Messenger Day to all users across the globe. In a statement provided to the scribe, Facebook said “We know that people come to Messenger to share everyday moments with friends and family. In Poland we are running a small test of new ways for people to share those updates visually. We have nothing more to announce at this time.”
