On Thursday night, October 27th, the Avenged Sevenfold concert in Los Angeles will also be streamed in Virtual Reality (VR) using the VRTGO VR Platform and application for iOS and Android. A select number of on-site guests will be able to “VR” themselves onto the stage, but virtual attendees worldwide can do the same as well. The concert organizers will have 50 Samsung Gear VR headsets at the venue.
Universal Music Group (UMG) is the main partner and seems to be the driving force behind the VRTGO VR platform. Per UMG, the goal of VTRGO is to enable an “immersive platform” to let fans experience unique music experiences.
UMG has not detailed what it intends to do with the platform, but there are two reasons to be interested in this kind of VR usage model. First, concerts are unique experiences which are arguably moments when fans are the closest to their favorite artists.
VR can further reduce this gap, and allow people outside the venue to experience the event as well, possibly in better (visual) conditions than someone inside the venue, at the back… There is value right there, depending on how well it is implemented.
Secondly, concerts are one of the main sources of profits for many artists, so this could be a new way to support them and expand their business. If you want to know how to connect this this concert, head to the official event page.
