Audi is one of the many German luxury car manufacturers working on electric cars. The Audi R8 is one of the best supercars the company has ever made. It showed off a production model of the electric version of this car at the 2015 Geneva Auto Show, but it appears that the electric sportscar will not be hitting the road. According to a new report, the German manufacturer has canceled the Audi R8 e-tron.
The Audi A8 e-tron was priced at $1.1 million so it wasn’t exactly priced for average consumers. Audi reportedly produced fewer than 100 units of this car and the lack of interest from those who can afford one likely contributed to the company’s decision to halt production.
The Audi R8 e-tron was equipped with a 92 kWh battery with two electric motors providing 456 horsepower. Audi claimed a 0-60mph time of 3.9 seconds. It was the only model in the R8 range with rear wheel drive.
Audi still sells an electric car but it’s not as exciting as the R8. The A3 e-tron is a plug-in hybrid hatchback that average consumers can actually afford. Audi is likely working on more electric cars which will be unveiled in the coming years, it’s part of Volkswagen, which has now made a major shift towards electric cars.
Exciting times are up ahead for electric car fans.
