It was recently reported that the country’s second largest mobile carrier, AT&T, is thinking about stopping sales of the Galaxy Note 7 due to recent reports of replacement devices catching fire as well. Samsung handed out new units as replacements to all existing customers after the recall was announced, it said that the new units did not have the same battery defect as the recalled units. AT&T isn’t convinced and has now confirmed that it has stopped selling the Galaxy Note 7.
AT&T and all its rival major carriers have already been allowing customers to exchange their replacement Galaxy Note 7 units for another Samsung device or one from any other manufacturer. It’s now the first carrier to stop sales completely and it goes without saying that others might follow suit as well.
The carrier confirmed that it’s no longer going to sell the Galaxy Note 7. It hasn’t said when sales might be resumed but it will obviously depend on Samsung’s investigation into the latest reports. The US CPSC is also investigating the matter so until it can be suitably established that the replacement Galaxy Note 7 is completely safe, it’s unlikely that AT&T will resume sales.
“Based on recent reports, we’re no longer exchanging new Note 7s at this time, pending further investigation of these reported incidents,” AT&T said, adding that “We still encourage customers with a recalled Note 7 to visit an AT&T location to exchange that device for another Samsung smartphone or other smartphone of their choice.”
AT&T has also said that it won’t hand out replacement Galaxy Note 7 units to customers who are still holding on to a recalled unit. Those customers will now have to pick another device when they come in to exchange their unit. It hasn’t clarified if it’s offering refunds to Galaxy Note 7 owners.
