Earlier this year Apple discontinued its Thunderbolt Display, but it was expected that the company would return with newer, updated models in the future. In a way they did, as LG announced the Ultrafine monitors that were developed specifically for Apple’s new MacBook Pros. For those hoping that this was just one of the options that would be available, and that we could see an Apple-branded display in the future, Patel’s tweet reveals that this is pretty much it.
Perhaps Apple could be working with other display makers to offer up a variety of Mac-specific displays, but if you wanted one designed and made by Apple, no such luck. We should point out that displays made by other manufacturers will work with Apple’s Mac computers just fine. You might have to tinker around to adjust scale and other settings, so the only real difference between those displays and the LG Ultrafines is perhaps optimization.
Based on the comments, it seems that many customers aren’t a fan of the new LG displays namely due to its design. While the Thunderbolt Displays were prohibitively expensive, they at least matched the aesthetics of your Mac.
